Eduardo Recife’s photo illustration accompanying the “Generation OMG” article in The New York Times (an unusual but thought provoking article)
“In 1951, Time magazine set out to paint a portrait of the nation’s youth, those born into the Great Depression. It doomed them as the Silent Generation, and a generally drab lot: cautious and resigned, uninterested in striking out in new directions or shaping the great issues of the day — the outwardly efficient types whose inner agonies the novel “Revolutionary Road” would dissect a decade later…Today’s youngest children — the recession babies — are being raised in the same kind of protective bubble as the Depression babies…” —Kate Zernike writes for the NY Times

for those who love looking at pictures

Lookybook, a site devoted to interactive browsing of picture books just launched today (in beta). This is one of the best examples I’ve seen of visually appealing book browsing off the surface of paper. I hope that parents purchase their favorite titles in book form, rather than sitting their child on their lap in front of the computer screen for repeats.

The site allows you to search for books by illustrator or author, and set up virtual bookshelves. The image above is from Sparkle & Spin by Ann & Paul Rand.

It’s a new frontier,” said Frazier. “We may be able to bring a book forward that hasn’t been seen in years. The goal of this is to create a broadened, level playing field for picture books.  — from Craig Frazier (founder of Lookybooks), as quoted in Publishers Weekly
