Despite the backlash from twitter and blogs, the new Syfy rebranding is still here. (Tropicana didn’t set the precedent for this one)

Sci fi channel rebranding and redesign “Syfy” is spotted in the urban wild with telephone booth and bus stop ads in NYC, New York. We caught these popping up in just the last couple of weeks in high-traffic areas around the city.

The Sci Fi Channel becomes Syfy with their rebranding and redesign. TVWeek has a full write up on the (supposed) move away from geekdom here. As the science fiction genre continues to expand we have to wonder if the content supercedes the brand.

New York, NY - March 16, 2009 - By changing the name to Syfy, which remains phonetically identical, the new brand broadens perceptions and embraces a wider and more diverse range of imagination-based entertainment including fantasy, paranormal, reality, mystery, action and adventure, as well as science fiction … Imagine Greater will become the new brand message and tagline, inviting both consumers and advertisers into a new era of unlimited imagination, exceptional experiences and greater entertainment.

The Simpsons redesigns their intro in HD to coincide with their update to a new widescreen format. Most of the main conventions for the intro were kept the same (i.e. bart and the chalkboard, power plant, couch gag, etc.), but many parts of the story have at least something new added/changed.
The debut episode in HD, entitled Take My Life, Please, will air Sunday, February 15th, 2009.
Watch below:

On first glance, we spotted at least 10 new additions, including Maggie’s unibrowed nemesis (Baby Gerald), and the “Mr. Sparkle” and “Tomacco” products in the Grocery scene.

A lengthy article from NYMag about Comedy Central’s new show Important Things with Demetri Martin, includes an image slideshow of Demetri’s random sketchbook. Demetri is also on the cover of the printed magazine this week.
I’m looking forward to a new comedy show that incorporates simple illustrations, graphs, animations and hand-lettering throughout. I have high hopes for a comedy host with an eye for design and illustration. Demetri “occasionally likes to visit the design section at MoMA to stand and admire a lamp, or a chair, or even a doorstop in which, by removing the extraneous parts, the designer has revealed the essential object…” (read more at nymag) Back in 2005, Gothamist posted an interview with the comedian.
Also, the show will host a weekly Important Things Picture Contest.

if you hate going to work…

I thought the commercial for Career Builder Tips by Wieden + Kennedy was the funniest of the commercials shown during the Super Bowl (and the fact that it’s Sunday night is a nice added benefit).

There’s more fun on the website for the viral campaign via anonymoustipgiver.com where you can choose an animated virtual character and send messages to co-workers (not sure this is a good idea) and friends.

(I thought the Alec Baldwin and Huluwood commercial was quite humorous too)

The Discovery Channel rebranding (motion graphics) done by Royale is reminiscent of flash animation transitions. It’s a mixture of jigsaw puzzle and flipping tile elements, using a few still photos (and small animations) to tell its story.

I thought this demo reel was very unique and I was instantly drawn in by the use of early punk rock aesthetics.
